figures bowing their thanks

Thank you!

In early March of last year, the World Health Organization declared COVID19 a pandemic. As we approach this anniversary, we want to tell you again how much your support has meant to us. During the stay-at-home order, we pivoted to providing mail order, and you were there with us. When we reopened in May, you were supportive of our mask requirement. You’ve been understanding about the broken supply chain and delays in deliveries. For all this this and so much more, we are grateful.

We continue to offer curbside service, home delivery, subscription services, personal shopping, online ordering, and shopping in the store.

Celebrating 20 years!

This year we mark another, happier anniversary. It’s been 20 years since the founding of Beagle Books, and we’re celebrating all year long! The 20th of each month we’ll give away a bag stuffed with books and bookish swag. Enter every time you’re in the store, no purchase necessary. If you can’t get in, email to enter. These are the only two ways to enter the drawing. (Note: prize bags must be picked up as we are unable to mail them. We will hold them, however.)

March 20, Count Down to Spring with The Very Hungry Caterpillar

On March 20, we’ll welcome spring by sharing sticker sheets related to another beloved book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Children are welcome, but we’ll also give stickers to parents or grandparents to take home, while supplies last.

Work was delayed.

Last month we told you we were having work done on the front of the store. The day we began a ten day stretch of temperatures below zero was the very day the work was to have begun. The new start date is in March and there may be times when we ask you to use the door at the back of the store. We’ll keep you posted on Facebook. And remember, we’re always glad to do curbside service or home delivery.

Paws for Poetry

book coverbook cover

Like most bookstores, we have a bookcase devoted to Bestsellers. The books shelved there are based on the bookseller lists from the American Booksellers Association as well as the Midwest Independent Booksellers Association. These lists are generated by sales in indie booksellers. There are currently not one but TWO books of poetry on the bestseller list, Devotions: The Selected Poems of Mary Oliver and Home Body. Yay for indie readers!

The best-selling poet at Beagle and Wolf in February is………. Mary Oliver.

After reading Keep Moving by Maggie Smith, I wanted to read the poetry by the author. She has a poetry book called Goldenrod coming out in July (available for pre-order), but I’m too impatient to wait for that, I needed something now-ish. While I wait for Goldenrod, I opted to read Good Bones. The title poem is available online: Good Bones by Maggie Smith and even better, includes a sound clip of the author reading the poem herself. The clip is 1 minute, 8 seconds. You have time—treat yourself. Like Smith’s writing in Keep Moving, the poetry of Good Bones is both succinct and generous. Much of the poems in this collection focus on the writer’s role as a mother.

Lawrence Ferlinghetti in front of an independent bookstore

"Lawrence Ferlinghetti, a poet, publisher and political iconoclast who inspired and nurtured generations of San Francisco artists and writers from City Lights, his famed bookstore, died on Monday [February 22].... He was 101." (The New York Times)

A sampling of Ferlinghetti’s poetry can be found here.
