Winners Never Quit
Mia Hamm

In this autobiographical picture book for 4-8 year olds, Mia Hamm tells the story of her passion for soccer growing up. Her problem was that she hated losing and would rather quit playing a game than lose. One day, her siblings simply started a game without her and wouldn’t let her play because she could not be relied upon to finish the game. Mia Hamm learned that playing the game and possibly losing was better than not playing at all.

Dream Big Little Pig!
Kristi Yamagushi

Kristi writes the story of a pig that wants to be star. Poppy the pig tries ballet, then singing, and finally modeling. She fails at each. Then Poppy happens to come across figure skating while in New Pork City. I love the strong message of never giving up in this book. I also enjoy the continued theme of cheering others on and believing in those people we love. Dream Big, Little Pig!

The Belles
Dhonielle Clayton

This is one of the best YA fantasies I’ve read in a very long time. The author’s vibrant, descriptive narrative makes the world she creates come alive. In this reality, everyone is born a bland gray shade and only a select few people have the ability to make the ugly “beautiful.” These people are called “Belles.” The main character’s name is Camellia, and she is a Belle who feels as though she must live up to the reputation of her mother, a previous favorite of the queen. The favorite Belle is allowed to live within the palace and beautify the court. At first Amber, one of Camellia’s sisters, is named the favorite. However, due to mysterious circumstances she is replaced by Camellia. Camellia soon realizes that the princess is not at all what she seems to be and that no one is to be trusted.
