I’m listening to the audiobook Counting by 7s by Holly Goldberg Sloan, a middle grade book about a girl, Willow, who is incredibly bright and struggling to get along in the world. Counting by 7s refers to a calming technique she uses (Willow can count incredibly high and fast by 7s ). Willow is a self-described person of color adopted by white parents. She is most interested in botany and medicine, which many of her middle school peers are not. The beginning of the book opens with Willow coming home to find a police car in her driveway and two officers with bad news. From there, we move back in time to what led up to this moment. Counting by 7s has won all kinds of awards and I’m glad I’m finally getting to it!

This fictional story takes place in the early 1900s on a train that is over 900 cars long. The main character, Will, is the son of the train’s engineer and conductor.
